Hey man, I saw a couple of places that you're from Australia. Good to see another aussie on here, and one with impeccable taste at that. You wouldn't happen to be located in melbourne would you? I am heading over at the end of january and am looking to find a couple of decent menswear stores to visit. I have an appointment with P. Johnson and I know about RL and Hardy Buck's but are there any other stores in the same vain?
Apologies for the delayed reply, have been taking a little R & R.
Melbourne’s menswear options are limited but improving. Tom and Jen at P Johnson Tailors will look after you very well and, depending on your budget, that would be my first port of call for any suits, sportscoats and shirts. They also stock some ties, pocket squares and occasionally shoes, so have a look at those. As I said, you will be well serviced here.
Then there is the larger, well established stores such as Henry Bucks (quite expensive for what you can get, if you are comfortable shopping online you will get much better prices there, good for the occasional item during sales - I believe there is one in early February, also good to see and feel products like Boglioli, Drakes and Brunello Cucinelli), Ralph Lauren (which is as expected, can be good during sales), Herringbone (which is good for shirts, ties, accessories, shoes [they stock Crockett and Jones]. Christian of Style Sage is the manager there so perhaps contact him if you want any information or advice), David Jones and Myer (typical overpriced department stores but things can be found, again, better during sales).
Other options are Incu (in Flinders Lane, boutique with labels not available elsewhere), Beggar Man Thief (in South Melbourne, for shoes) and Sarti Tailors (in Little Collins Street and La Trobe Street, I believe they are having large sales at the moment). Good things are written in the Australian Members thread on Style Forum about Azzaro in South Melbourne for shoes and well priced OTR suits etc, but I have no experience with them (where possible I am a P Johnson MTM man these days). Might be worth looking through the Australian Members thread, those who post there are usually very helpful. Little Collins Street has a range of menswear stores and might be worth a walk along, but I have given up there as it is mostly “fashion forward”, overpriced rubbish.
My other main port of call is Gant (either on Chapel Street or Westfield Doncaster). I like the Rugger and Michael Bastian ranges in particular, but some of the standard stock is pretty good too. I have a voucher for 50% off everything at Gant until 29th January (if this interests you message with an email address and I will send on).
And lastly, if you can getting out there Essendon DFO has a Gant store and a Ralph Lauren one - you can usually get a bargain there.
If you are here during the week and want to treat yourself Shine Shoe Shine in the Rialto building will polish up your footwear ($10 a pair last time I was there) and All the King’s Men in North Melbourne is the best barber I have found here (though the waiting time there is gettting a little over the top).
Hope this helps you and others might contribute via the reply function too. I would start at P Johnson Tailors and work from there. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts, especially if you find some other places.
Good luck. Hope you enjoy your time in this wonderful city.
PS Just for the record, not an Australian, I moved here from Scotland about 4 years ago, so still find new places all the time.
